Political gladiators across party lines in Bayelsa State have sued for unity and peaceful coexistence among parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
They spoke at the “Double Blessings” celebration and novelty football match held at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, to honour Arise News reporter, Ovieteme George, who won the Africa Media Award in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Reporter of the Year award from the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) in Abuja.
Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Dr. Peter Akpe, who took the ceremonial kick-off shortly after the weekly Prosperity Walk, said the unity and development of Bayelsa must come first, irrespective of political differences.
Akpe said the state government was proud of Ovieteme’s achievements, noting that journalism in Bayelsa took a new shape when he came on board.
He said Ovieteme’s hard work and persistence have put Bayelsa and Nigeria on the global map, adding that his awards were a product of sacrifice and commitment.
Former Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), described Ovieteme as a goal-getter whose success story should inspire young people.
He urged youths in Bayelsa and the Niger Delta to emulate him, saying focus remains the key to success no matter the environment.
Another former Deputy Governor, Chief Peremobowei Ebebi, said the double honour reflects years of hard work, describing Ovieteme as a thorough professional and a source of unity.
For the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barr. George Turnah, peace and unity remain the only path to development. He urged politicians to put Bayelsa first before party interest.
Turnah noted that Bayelsa has enjoyed relative peace in the last six years under the Prosperity administration.
Responding, Ovieteme George said his stories were not aimed at winning awards but at giving voice to the voiceless. He thanked God for the recognition.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri, Deputy Governor Akpe, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Tantita Security boss, Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), and Tantita MD, Engr. Kestin Pondi, for their support.
He also thanked former deputy governors Jonah and Ebebi, the Ministry of Sports Development, footballers and colleagues in the media.
In the novelty matches, Bayelsa Selected All-Stars drew 1-1 with Port Harcourt Ex-Professionals, while Selected Elders lost 1-2 to Bayelsa Selected Elders.
Also at the event were APC Chairman, Hon. Warman Ogoriba; former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tonye Isenah; Works Commissioner, ESV Moses Teibowei; lawmaker representing KOLGA Constituency II, Hon. Wisdom Fafi; Monimichelle boss, Mr. Ebi Egbe, and DG, Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe.
