Bayelsa Starlets Academy began their campaign in the Nationwide League One, NLO U-19 Youth League on a winning note with a 3-2 comeback victory over Uchenna Kanu Football Academy of Akwa Ibom State.
The Matchday One fixture, played on Sunday at the Samson Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa, saw the Yenagoa-based side, affiliated to FC Barcelona of Spain, fight back from two goals down to claim maximum points.
Uchenna Kanu FA took an early lead through James Anthony before Augustine Daniel doubled the advantage for the visitors.
Despite the setback, Starlets maintained their possession-based approach and continued to pile pressure on their opponents. Their persistence paid off in the 37th minute when Jude Onisoya pulled a goal back with a stunning 30-yard strike.
Substitute Uduak Joel drew Starlets level before the break, converting from Micah Kilete’s delivery.
Kilete sealed the comeback for the hosts in the 71st minute, finishing off a brilliant assist from Christopher James to make it 3-2.
Starlets will next face local rivals Bayelsa United Feeders on Tuesday, August 18, at the Samson Siasia Stadium by 3:00 p.m.
In other fixtures decided on Sunday, Dolphins ACA FC of Port Harcourt thrashed Obago FA 5-1 in an all Port Harcourt encounter, while Bayelsa United Feeders were held to a 1-1 draw by Benedi FC of Rivers State, with Ayeke Godbless continuing his impressive form.
Reacting after the match, Bayelsa Starlets Head Coach, Freeborn Onome, commended his players for their resilience, adding that focus has now shifted to the next game against Bayelsa United Feeders.
On his part, Uchenna Kanu FA Coach, Adesola Ali, attributed his team’s defeat to loss of concentration after taking the lead, noting that the players have learnt from their mistakes and will bounce back in their next fixture.
