Yenagoa – The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Bayelsa State Council has commended the Bayelsa State Government over the ongoing headcount of persons living with mental illness in Yenagoa metropolis.
The Council described the exercise as a proactive step in the right direction and a clear demonstration that the government is responsive to public concerns.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by its Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, the NUJ said the issue of mentally-ill persons roaming the streets of the state capital was deliberated upon during its Congress held on June 25, 2026, and captured in the communique issued at the end of the meeting.
According to the statement, the Union lauded Governor Douye Diri for directing the Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development to commence immediate action on the matter.
The Council noted that the headcount would not only help sanitize the environment, but also ensure care, treatment and rehabilitation for vulnerable persons.
It assured the state government of its continued partnership and support in advancing policies that promote public health, safety, welfare of citizens and good governance.
The NUJ further reiterated the commitment of journalists in the state to their statutory role as watchdog of the society through objective reportage and constructive engagement.
