The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates Confraternity), Oxbow Marino Deck, has commemorated the International Day of Democracy with a radio advocacy programme on democracy and civic responsibility.

According to the association, the initiative formed part of its commitment to public enlightenment and advocacy for responsible citizenship and good governance.

Led by its Capoon, Arc. Binafeigha Timiebi Reuben, PhD, the Deck held the live programme on Peoples FM 93.1, Yenagoa, to stimulate discourse on democratic governance and citizen participation.

The conversation, anchored by Mr. Victor Eulogy, featured a panel of discussants comprising Mr. Promise Beshel, Barr. Ebinyu George Aderigha and Barr. Adogbeji Junior Shakarho, who brought diverse professional perspectives to bear on the issues.

The panel emphasised that democracy extends beyond the periodic conduct of elections, highlighting the need for active participation, respect for democratic norms and protection of citizens’ rights.

The discussants examined challenges confronting democratic consolidation in Nigeria, including voter apathy, vote-buying and electoral misconduct, and urged citizens to make informed and independent choices at the polls.

They underscored that the right to vote is a fundamental instrument for influencing governance and demanding accountability.

The discussants further noted that civic responsibility entails staying informed, participating in public discourse, respecting differing opinions and demanding transparency from those in public office.

Reuben said the presence of the Deck’s leadership at the programme underscored its commitment to initiatives that promote civic awareness and democratic ideals.

The Oxbow Marino Deck reaffirmed that democracy thrives when citizens are adequately informed, actively engaged and willing to hold institutions accountable.

It added that building a stronger democratic society requires continuous civic engagement, respect for the rule of law, tolerance and collective commitment to the common good.
