A 26-year-old man identified as Tari, popularly known as Heavyweight, has reportedly been killed in a clash between rival youth groups in Diema community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The deceased, said to hail from Opu-Nembe (Bassambiri), was reportedly macheted to death during a confrontation involving two factions aligned with rival traditional rulers in the community.
According to sources, the crisis erupted after His Highness Ingo Ikele, the Amayanabo of Diema-Brass, allegedly directed youths loyal to him to participate in an inspection of a parcel of land said to have been earmarked for a crude oil tank farm by an unidentified oil company.
The planned visit was reportedly opposed by another group loyal to His Highness Baratuaipre Amaene, triggering a disagreement that later escalated into violence.
Tari reportedly sustained fatal injuries during the confrontation and was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival by medical personnel.
The incident has raised concerns over the rivalry between the youth factions and its potential implications for peace in the community.
However, the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, said normalcy had returned to the area.
Mohammed added that the police had commenced an investigation to establish the circumstances that led to the fatal clash.
