Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has charged members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to be security conscious and avoid activities capable of compromising their safety during the service year.

The governor warned against night journeys, unsafe travel on waterways, cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime and partisan politics.

Diri gave the charge during the closing ceremony of the three-week orientation course for the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Boro Town, Bayelsa State.

Represented by his Executive Assistant on NYSC Matters, Dr Wisdom Poyeri, the governor advised the corps members to use approved safety equipment and promptly report security concerns through appropriate channels.

He urged them to uphold discipline, prioritise their personal safety and deploy their knowledge and skills towards the development of their host communities as they proceed to their respective Places of Primary Assignment (PPA).

Congratulating the corps members on the successful completion of the orientation course, Diri urged them to demonstrate commitment, professionalism and a strong sense of responsibility throughout their service year.

He also encouraged them to integrate into their host communities by respecting the people’s cultures, traditions and values while applying their knowledge and skills to address identified community needs and promote peaceful coexistence.

On self-reliance, the governor urged the corps members to build on the skills acquired through the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme and pursue further training to improve their prospects for sustainable livelihoods.

Diri reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with the NYSC and relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety and welfare of corps members and provide an enabling environment for effective service delivery.

He commended the NYSC management, Bayelsa State Coordinator, Mr Samuel Amaramiro Pepple, the camp director, the camp commandant and other camp officials for their contributions to the successful conduct of the orientation course.

The ceremony marked the conclusion of the three-week orientation exercise, paving the way for the corps members to proceed to their respective places of primary assignment across Bayelsa State, where they are expected to uphold the ideals of the NYSC and contribute meaningfully to community development.
