Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Dr Peter Akpe, on Friday boosted the second Dare/Bayelsa State Open National Mixed Martial Arts Championship in Yenagoa with his presence, as Bayelsa won two gold medals and Enugu State secured one in the day’s finals.
Akpe, a senior martial arts black belt holder, was welcomed at the Multipurpose Hall of the Samson Siasia Stadium by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Dr Daniel Igali, and President of the Mixed Martial Arts Federation of Nigeria, Ambassador Henry George, alongside other dignitaries.

The deputy governor watched some of the contests, which showcased the skills, determination and competitive spirit of athletes representing various states.
His visit highlighted the Bayelsa State Government’s support for sports development and its efforts to promote combat sports, discover talents and provide athletes with opportunities to compete at national level.
In the opening final, Bayelsa’s Adolfus Daniella defeated Okechukwu Joy of Enugu State to secure the host state’s first gold medal.
Enugu State earned its gold medal in the next contest when Augustina Emmanuella defeated Effence James of Akwa Ibom State.

Bayelsa added a second gold medal through Paul Peace, who overcame Delta State’s Adache Elizabeth in the final bout of the day.
The victories increased the stakes ahead of Saturday’s grand finale, when the remaining contests will determine the championship’s final medal table.
Beyond the competition, the event offers Bayelsa an opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to host major sporting events through its facilities, organisation and hospitality.
The championship is also expected to contribute to the development of mixed martial arts in Nigeria by providing a platform for athletes to showcase their abilities and gain experience in national competition.
As the championship enters its final stage, attention will be on the concluding bouts and the participating states’ efforts to finish among the leading medal winners.
